Prehistoric caves, fortified castles and villages, important wine region.
Diverse landscape of Atlantic coastline, beaches, flat forest land, Pyrénées mountains, and the rolling hills and river valleys of the Dordogne. The region’s history began thousands of year’s ago when Cro-magnon man lived in the caves of the Périgord and left cave paintings in sites such as Lascaux and Les Eyzies. More recent remnants of Aquitaine’s history date from the time of Eléonore of Aquitaine, consort of Louis VII, King of France. When she married Henry Plantagenet, who became King of England in 1154, she began several centuries of conflict between the French and English for control of Aquitaine. Today, the fortified villages and castles built during this time offer charm to the winding countryside and provide interesting stops along the road.Aquitaine’s capital, Bordeaux is a thriving port city on the Garonne River with beautiful 18th-century mansions and architecture, including its Grand Theatre by architect Victor Louis, excellent shopping and numerous cultural events, such as the traditional May Music Festival.Bordeaux is particularly well known for its surrounding wine-growing region. The vineyards of Bordeaux with their Margaux, Médoc, Sauternes and St. Emilion wines are leaders in their fields in an area where many other excellent wines are produced. Most chateaux open their doors to allow visits to their cellars and wine tastings. The varied Aquitaine region includes not only the prehistoric caves, villages and rolling river valleys of the Dordogne and the Bordeaux vineyards, but also the rocky Pyrénées mountain chain, the Basque country with its beautiful beaches, excellent surfing and picturesque fishing villages, the flat forest land of the Landes and the medieval castles and villages in Lot-et-Garonne.

Walking in the Dordogne, Horse riding in the Dordogne, Canoeing in the Dordogne, various ways to see the REAL Dordogne.
The only way to see the REAL Dordogne is to get off the roads and on the tracks. Let them take you to some of the biggest secrets the Dordogne has to offer, as well as the famous spots and attractions the Dordogne has to offer, they will also take you to Prehistoric caves, rock shelters, dwellings, underground caverns etc. none of which you will find mentioned on any maps or in any guide books… Be one of very few to visit these secret places.
At Walking Dordogne you are based in one spot, your accommodation is at the nicest B&B in the Dordogne, you will feel at home here, you do not need to pack your belongings every morning to move on again to the next accommodation.
After any of the walks or other activities, you can just relax at the pool, or stroll into Les Eyzies for an ice cream

Walking Dordogne is local, they live here, they know the area, and they know the best places to go at the best time. They know what and where to avoid. They take you to places unknown to tourists and tour operators that are not local, and not mentioned in guide books or maps, places that are known only to locals.

Walking Dordogne is extremely flexible, the one thing we can not control is the weather, and we all know that getting soaked on a walk is not a nice experience. With Walking Dordogne, the weather is not a problem, if they have a walk planned and it is raining, they just get into a car and visit some scenic attractions, such as the caves of Lascaux, National Prehistoric Museum, Castle of Beynac, etc. There is not a single tour operator that offers such flexibility as they do.

Les Eyzies de Tayac, situated at the confluence of the Vezere and Beune Rivers, was known as just “TAYAC” until the end of the 19th century.
The first settlers in the valley settled here over 350.000 years ago. The reason they settled in the Vezere Valley during the Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods was because of the limestone cliffs that lined the valley. The cliffs, caves, over-hanging shelters and rock ledges offered an excellent protection against the harsh freezing weather that froze the steppe landscape. The nomads would use the shallow hollows in the cliffs, using branches and hides and furs to build temporarily camps and shelters.

In 1863 excavations began, which led to the discovery of well over a hundred sites in just the lower Vezere Valley.
In 1868 the Cro-Magnon Shelter was discovered in Les Eyzies, and revealed the existence of a new stage in human evolution.
Five skeletons ornamented with jewels and shells, including a well preserved man of about forty to fifty years old. The link between Prehistoric Man and Modern Man was discovered here at Les Eyzies.

During the 10th and 11th century, the lords of Tayac built a fort into and under the rock face in Les Eyzies, the spot that now houses the “National Prehistoric Museum” The fort, known as “Roc de Tayac”

During the early 12th century the Monks from the Monstery of Paunat built the fortified church “St Martin” that still stands today, and is probably one of the nicest fortified churches in the Perigord.

Most people visiting the Vezere and Dordogne Valley have an interest in history, so why not stay a few nights in an historic B&B in the heart of it all?. B&B Ferme de Tayac, a 12th century former farmhouse / monastery ideally situated in Les Eyzies de Tayac, in the heart of the Vezere Valley, known as the “Prehistoric Capital of the World”
In the beginning of the 12th century, the monks of the monastery of Paunat settled in Tayac, and started building the fortified church of Tayac, Saint Martin. At the same time they started buiding “Ferme de Tayac” which became the working farm and monastery for the monks.
B&B Ferme de Tayac is a must place to stay if you are visiting the Dordogne, since it officially opened to the public 2 years ago, it has been rated the #1 B&B accommodation both years running. B&B Ferme de Tayac is a 12th Century former Monastery farmhouse, lived in and run by the Monks who owned and worked the land for hundreds of years. Located in the heart of the Vezere Valley in the picturesque small village of Tayac, just 8 minutes walk from the center of Les Eyzies. In 2001 Suzanne & Mike purchased Ferme de Tayac after it had been unoccupied for over 10 years. It was in a sorry state, and was deemed dangerous and a hazzard. It took Suzanne & Mike 7 years to bring Ferme de Tayac back to it’s former glory. With among other things, meter thick walls, rooms built into solid rock, oak beam structures, and bedrooms in former monks quarters make Ferme de Tayac a speacial and very unique place to stay whilst visiting the Dordogne, and it is not hard to see why Ferme de Tayac has been the travellers choice of accommodation for 2 years.

For more and updated info on Ferme de Tayac please visit their official web site www.fermedetayac.com

The Vezere Valley in the hart of the “Perigord Noir” in the Dordogne, is named after the River that cuts through it.
In and around the town of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac are a series of prehistoric rock dwellings, the caves include some of the most significant archaeological finds of the Upper Paleolithic (from about 40,000 to10,000 years ago) and Middle Paleolithic (200,000 to 40,000 years ago) periods they are especially noted for their extensive wall drawings.
Situated in the Vézère Valley the Les Eyzies de Tayac caves are among a series of decorated grottoes in the area that were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

The Vézère valley contains 147 prehistoric sites dating from the Paleolithic and 25 decorated caves. It is particularly interesting from an ethnological and anthropological, as well as an aesthetic point of view because of its cave paintings, especially those of the Lascaux Cave, whose discovery in 1940 was of great importance for the history of prehistoric art.
The Vezere Valley is also home to the National Prehistoric Museum, Font de Gaume, Combareilles, Cro Magnon Shelter, The Grand Roc and many, many more sites of interest
