Search engine optimization
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Search engine optimization (SEO), considered by many to be a subset of search engine marketing, is a term used to describe a process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines, usually in “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Those efforts may also be seen in more narrow vertical search engines involving areas such as local search. Many site owners and consultants engaging in SEO attempt to pursue qualified visitors to a site, and the quality of visitor traffic can be measured by how often a visitor using a specific keyword phrase leads to a desired conversion action, such as making a purchase, viewing or downloading a certain page, requesting further information, signing up for a newsletter, or taking some other specific action.

Now a day the success of a web site depends on the search engine rankings, not many people go further than page 3 unless they really have to. The search engines of today are not to be taken lightly, we all know of ways to cheat the search engines, cut corners… or at least we thought we did. However the “invisible fonts”, “keyword bombing” “link farming” etc will do more damage than good, actually they will wipe your site off the rankings completely. The latest Google Bot uses a 20 point filter to determine your sites rankings, and if caught “cheating” by any of these 20 (and counting) filters your site will be “bumped” 30!! places down the rankings, which can be devastating, that means if a site that has a #1 ranking gets caught cheating, it will go from page 1 to page 3.. So if that happens, I just remove the “cheat code” and all is well??… Forget it!.. it does not stop there.. Google will what they call “Filter Bomb” you, meaning they (Google) insert a filter code in their system to filter your site!!.. which means they have stopped crawling your site. Can you remove the Filter??.. NO, you can however ask Google to remove it for you, but your site would have to be squeaky clean, and I’m sure they keep an eye on it… So if you are still using the “Old” methods of cheating, you have been warned.

Facts of the week: Google’s plans for the next months

Google’s Matt Cutts is the premier source for all things related to Google and search engine optimization. He works for the quality group of Google, specializing in search engine optimization issues.

Matt Cutts has just revealed Google’s latest ranking plans for 2007 in his blog.

How you might be affected by Google’s plans for the next months ?

It is likely that you will see more variance in your Google rankings because Google’s internal databases are going to be updated every 1-2 days instead of every 3-4 weeks.

Google usually reveals Page Rank updates quarterly to the public. A new Page Rank update is underway. However, this does not mean that your Google rankings will change because the new Page Rank values are already incorporated into their ranking algorithms.

Google’s supplemental results should be nothing to be afraid of. If your site shows up in the supplemental results, then don’t worry. According to Matt Cutts, the Page Rank of a web page determines if the page appears in the regular or supplemental results.

The supplemental results continue to get fresher, “and web site owners may see more traffic from their supplemental results pages.”

Google plans to change the “file type:” operator so that it doesn’t require an additional query word.

Google discovered a small anomaly with .com domains that are hosted outside the US. A fix has been submitted so the rankings of the affected sites might change.

There will be no “major infrastructure-related” ranking updates in the near future.

What you can do to get high rankings in the new Google ?

Matt Cutts makes it clear: “The approach I’d recommend in that case is to use solid white-hat SEO to get high-quality links (e.g. editorially given by other sites on the basis of merit).”
